History/Mission

Mission
The DeKalb County Youth Service Bureau, Inc. (YSB) assists youth as they build healthy lives and relationships with their families, friends, and community.

Our Values

  • Compassion:  to serve all youth and families with empathy, dignity and respect
  • Community:  to advocate for all youth and families in our community; for impact today and in the future
  • Competency:  to learn along with our youth and families; to enhance our professional and ethical practices; to ultimately help youth achieve their goals

Our Vision

YSB envisions a community where all young people know they are valued as important contributors, and know that YSB is here to support them so they can live up to their potential and achieve their personal goals.

Philosophy

YSB provides individual, family, and group counseling, as well as specialty services which are designed to keep families intact, keep youth out of the juvenile court system, and empower youth to achieve. We have trauma certified, bilingual, school based and reduced-cost services, which means more people have access to the help they need. No one is turned away for an inability to pay.

Through the years, YSB has developed a philosophy of networking with other community resources to assist youth with problem-solving and to develop programs to meet the needs of youth.  YSB therapists are Master’s Level and work exclusively with youth and their families.  The therapists are skilled in assessing the needs of families, engaging youth, and recognizing their strengths.  The staff works with youth and their families to establish positive alternatives to negative and/or destructive behaviors and to use community resources when appropriate.

History
The DeKalb County Youth Service Bureau (YSB) has been enriching the lives and relationships of youth ages 8 to 18 and their families for over 45 years. YSB became a separate agency in 1971 after being a City of DeKalb Department since 1969. YSB was one of three initial youth service bureaus in Illinois and since its inception, continues to respond to and meet the service needs of today’s youth and their families. YSB is a not-for-profit 501 (c)(3) agency governed by a volunteer Board of Directors from throughout DeKalb County.

About 40% of our financial support comes from the DeKalb County Community Mental health Board.  We also receive local support from DeKalb Township and the City of DeKalb.
